When we were exploring this year's FOGcon theme, The City in Speculative Fiction, Fritz Leiber's name kept coming up as an innovative writer and thinker on our topic. He had everything we could ask for in an Honored Guest: strong San Francisco connections, a body of award-winning work, and influential thinking in the field.
Unfortunately, he lacked one trait generally considered useful in Honored Guests: vitality. Literally. Leiber died in 1992.
Nevertheless, we are honoring Fritz Leiber as forebear and moving spirit of the 2011 FOGcon. We believe the man who wrote "Smoke Ghost" and Our Lady of Darkness would approve.
